Second-hand pram for newborns: deep carrycot and safety
A second-hand pram for a newborn is today a completely common and smart choice. A newborn spends many hours a day in the pram, and their spine and airways require specific conditions that a deep carrycot reliably provides. At the same time, you know you will actively use this pram for only a few months before the child outgrows it to sit up. Buying a new one for thousands of Kč does not always make sense for this phase, especially if you know what to look for when choosing a second-hand item.
Why a newborn needs a deep carrycot
A newborn should lie fully flat: approximately until six months of age, or until the child can sit firmly on their own. A deep carrycot with a straight, firmer mattress ensures a physiologically correct position for the spine and head. The child lies across it, protected on both sides, with the body's weight evenly distributed.
Breathability is equally important: a newborn cannot turn over or adjust their position on their own. The carrycot should have breathable side material, a replaceable and washable mattress, and sufficient air space around the head. Cheaper pushchairs or multifunctional combinations with flat seats do not provide a full replacement for a carrycot.
What to look for in a second-hand item for a newborn
Buying a second-hand pram for a newborn is fine, if you know what to check. Several areas you must not skip:
- Hygiene of the basket interior - Check the corners and joints of the basket for mould. The fabric interior in second-hand prams may be several years old. If it cannot be removed or washed, look elsewhere.
- Matrace - this is the key point. Ideally, the seller has replaced the mattress or supplies a new one. Old mattresses risk deformation and hygiene issues. Replacement mattresses for popular models (Bugaboo, Joolz, Cybex) are available as original or alternative parts at acceptable prices.
- Age of textile - Faded, yellowed or otherwise damaged covers indicate not only aesthetic issues but also how the item was used and stored.
- Kompletnost - The carrycot must come with the appropriate adapters for the specific chassis. Without them, it cannot be attached to the pushchair. Check before purchase that the listing is complete.
- Brake and belts - test the brakes on site and check that the straps are not frayed or deformed at the buckle. Safety components cannot be repaired, only replaced, which is often complicated.

Carriage and car seat: second-hand travel system
The combination of a carrycot plus car seat, known as a travel system, is very popular with young families. A Group 0+ or i-Size car seat clicks onto the same chassis in place of the carrycot, so you do not need to transfer the child. This combination is a good deal on the second-hand market, but it requires caution.
When buying a second-hand car seat, always verify that it has not been involved in an accident. The seller should guarantee this, if they cannot provide its history or are unsure, do not buy the car seat. This applies without exception, even if it looks perfect. A second-hand pram body and chassis can be purchased, but a car seat should always be bought with care and only with a verifiable history.
Adapters and compatibility
The combination of carrycot and car seat works only with the appropriate adapters. Each manufacturer has its own system, and often different generations are not backward compatible. When buying second-hand, always specify the chassis generation and verify compatibility with the car seat you intend to use, ideally on the manufacturer's website or by contacting customer support.
